I was recently at a bar talking to a girl about her skin. The conversation was going swimmingly until she said, “Yeah I don’t wear sun screen.” It was then I launched into a tirade about how important sunscreen is. Even on a cold cloudy day UV rays still shine on through! I’m not sure if she took my advice. To be honest I’m not sure where or when the conversation ended, but I thought about this the next morning, and not because she was white and maybe needed to use sunscreen (sorry round eyes, but Asians get a point on this one), but I realized that not everyone takes the proper steps to shield themselves from the harmful rays of the sun. Maybe she didn’t take my amazing advice, but maybe you will, and should. So here it is. Sunscreen. Don’t leave home without it. Serious.
Below are some tips and hints to SPF application from Craig Shishido, Medical Esthetician and Co- Founder of Gentle Star MedSpa and my go to guy about everything skin, facial, beauty. Dont forget to like them on Facebook.
- Achieving the benefits of an SPF numerical value is assuming that you are saturating your skin with the product. You need at least a “teaspoon” amount of product to hit that value. More if you are covering your neck, ears, and chest.
- Don’t bank on your makeup to give you full SPF protection. Consider the SPF in makeup to be an added benefit to your daily sunscreen not a replacement for your sunscreen.
- I recommend SPF 30 for daily use because most people apply sunscreens inefficiently in the morning so you’ll probably get about an SPF 15 protection benefit with a fast & sloppy “I’m late for work” application.
- If you are planning to take photos of yourself, avoid using physical blocks containing zinc or titanium because it will sometimes make your face look ghostly white in the photo. Use chemical blocks instead. I like the Jan Marini Daily Face SPF 30 for daily city use and for photos.
For myself there are two things I put on my face every day regardless of where I’m going: my tinted moisturizer from Laura Mercer, SPF 20 and my La- Roche Posay Anthelios SPF 60. Don’t be scared of the tinted moisturizer. It gives you a dewy glow and helps even out your skin tone without being cakey. I add the La- Roche Posay for a higher spf. With these two products I can walk out of the house confident that my face is radiant and protected :). Remember, don’t forget your ears and neck.
